Bendigo Wound Management offers a Nurse Practitioner (NP) led service for assessment and treatment for clients presenting with a wounds of a variety of aetiologies, a large percentage of which are clients with lower limb ulceration.
Holistic and comprehensive assessment is provided based on best practice and timely investigations, such as duplex scanning is available on premises through MIVIR Regional Vascular Services (MIVIR).
The relationship between the services has provided not only a unique learning environment but an opportunity to objectively review traditional assessment and treatment for individuals with lower limb ulceration and has led to questioning practice through disparity identified in multiple cases.
Current assessment practices date back as far as 1908: are these practices still relevant? Do we rely too heavily on diagnostic results such as ABPI and toe pressures and do such results reflect reality? Treatment for lower limb ulceration has progressed over the years, but do we consider all options for our clients? Are we contributing to slow healing and other wound related complications?
This session will provide an overview of current practice and why this needs to be challenged and treatment options available for individuals with lower limb ulceration.
